We all know water is great for a healthier body, but how else can we use water to benefit our bodies?
I am going to take you through a few ways we can use water to our advantage — not just as a drink but also in food preparation, exercise and leisure…
Water no.1: Steam
Steam can be used in a variety of ways to improve our bodies.
We all think we are being healthy when we include a portion of boiled vegetables with our meal but little do many of us know, we are actually killing a large amount of the beneficial nutrients in the boiling process.
Steaming our vegetables instead of boiling them preserves these nutrients and keeping them a little al dente for extra crispiness provides a satisfactory way to consume them as well as extra health benefits.
Or — after a hard day at work or with the children, take a trip to a sauna, pile on the hot coals, drip them with water and sit back and let your body soak up the heat! If you can endure the heat then the sweating and detoxifying benefits of a sauna are pretty unbeatable, not to mention how enjoyable the relaxing sound of absolutely nothing can be while lounging in the heat…
Water no.2: Ice
Here is a little known fact for you: Ice water burns calories!
It’s true, ice water actually makes your body burn calories and here is the science behind the genius. When the body is hit by cold water it has to raise the temperature of the water in order to process it, so unless you pee ice cold urine; it is safe to assume your body is doing its calorie-burning job simply by you opening the fridge door!
You can expect to burn around 70-100 calories a day through consuming the recommended daily intake of water at ice temperature so although it won’t make a huge difference, every calorie counts in this game!
Water no.3: Swimming
Swimming is a great way to exercise as it burns calories and tones muscles.
Here are a few places you can exercise in the water:
- Swimming pool — an obvious one that can be mixed in with other activities such as seeing friends or playing with the children
- Rivers and lakes — swimming in fresh water is refreshing and feels great on your skin. Just ensure it is clean and safe for swimming before you jump in, and again this can be doubled up with walking the dog or taking the family on a hike
- Sea — the salt water in the sea invigorates your pores and is a great place to enjoy a swim. Holidays are a time to relax but they are also a time to stay active, so take the time to splash around in the sea to burn some calories while you have fun
So whether you steam, ice or exercise remember — water is not just for drinking; it can be a way of life, too!
