Skinny vs. Fit — The Battle of the Myths

June 28th, 2010 | Posted in Fitness tips | 2 Comments »

Firstly, being skinny and being fit are two totally different things. Many women are constantly trying to be skinny and not enough are trying to get fit, and we need to bash out some of the myths that surround the world of fitness in order to get more people motivated to boost their fitness levels rather than just obsessing about how skinny they are.

Getting skinny is not what being fit is all about. Yes, being fit will ultimately result in weight loss but it also means your overall body will be improved from your mind set, your skin and your muscle tone and your general stress levels are also likely to enjoy a reduction!

Myth #1 — Being skinny means not eating

As women, we are too often led to believe that if you want to be skinny you shouldn’t eat, which couldn’t be further from the truth. The problem with not eating (besides the obvious not too distant prospect of starvation) is that when you do then eat something it stores as fat as your body almost goes into a panic-type mode and feels that it must store the fat in order to function. So the result is you eat less but still put on weight. Pointless.

Substitute rule 1 – Being skinny means eating healthily

Eating healthy food as opposed to not eating at all means that not only do you not go too skinny but you also avoid harming yourself or worse, developing an eating disorder. Eating the right foods will allow you to stay slim without damaging yourself and you will find your mind and body will benefit from healthy foods in a way that avoiding food achieves the exact opposite.

Myth #2 – If I work out I will get huge muscles

When you say weight lifting or working out to many women they panic and think they’ll turn into a muscle-bound man at the very sight of a dumb bell (BTW – pun fully intended!). Working out with weights does not mean you won’t be skinny anymore and it does not mean you will transform into Arnold Schwarzenegger over night.

Substitute rule 2 – Working out with the right weights will result in muscle tone

Working out with weights allow your slim body to slim down further plus build muscle tone so you keep a skinny stomach only you have slight definition to it, which is far sexier than seeing your ribs protruding.

Myth #3 – Being skinny is hot!

Being skinny is not so attractive. In fact, the majority of men prefer women with curves that are toned and slim but not skinny. Even beautiful stars such as Angelina Jolie get their fair share of abuse from the press when they go too skinny, as skinny is simply not as sexy as toned. And if Angelina can’t get away with it, let’s be honest; no one can!

Substitute rule 3 – Being toned is hotter!

Being toned, on the other hand, still means being slim, but you swap the sticking-out rib look for a flat stomach with definition. Check out ultra fit Jessica Alba and Jennifer Aniston for a few ideas on how sexy being toned can be…

  1. Michael says:

I completely agree. My gf is an NPC bodybuilder and I’ll take a woman with a toned/muscular build over a skinny soft woman. It’s healthier and sexier.

  2. Persons, ideally, should adjust their attitudes about food. Great website…good information. With the health crisis we have now, people should also check out Acai.
